A Dental Assistant’s day is varied and no two days are the same! There is a wide range of treatments to assist the Dentist with, working in the Sterilisation area to sterilise all the instruments and
working on reception. It is a fast paced, exciting environment where you are constantly learning new things. You can either study a Certificate 3 in Dental Assisting, learn on the job or, as Pacific Smiles does, you can do a traineeship, which is a combination of on the job practical learning and theory based course work to complete your certificate 3 at the same time.
Dental is an in demand career providing ongoing job security and multiple career opportunities. As a general Dental Assistant, there is variety in the treatments you learn to assist with from general check ups and cleans, tooth extractions and fillings right through to dental implants, root canal treatments and surgical work using general anesthetic. You can go on to study further and become an Oral Health Therapist, Dental Hygienist or even a Dentist yourself! There is also the option to move down the management path where you become a Clinical Coordinator, overseeing parts of the clinic or Managing the whole clinic as a Centre Manager or Practice Manager.
